The Luna Lounge Story

How a trip to Mexico and an adopted dog sparked the name of our rooftop patio.

What’s in a name?

Curious why we named our new Roof-Top Patio The Luna Lounge?

Luna, the newest addition to our family was a street dog from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Aside from The LIDO, we both share a passion for animal rescue. Over the years, we have come to love Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where we visit a couple of times per year to enjoy the sunshine, but we also like to give back to the community where we have enjoyed so many wonderful memories.

We regularly volunteer and donate to a few different rescue organizations in the Puerto Vallarta area and over the years have helped transport over 20 dogs to their forever homes in Canada (along with ‘mom Mohr’ who is also part of our many Mexican shenanigans). When you are involved in animal rescue, it seems that fate puts people right where they are supposed to be.

Luna shortly after finding us in Bucerias, Mexico

We were on ‘date night’ in Bucerias, Mexico, a town outside of Puerto Vallarta. We had a few drinks…..or more…..at one of our favorite spots, The Luna Lounge. Some may recognize The Luna Lounge as the home of ‘The Crazy Bitches’ a drag show that we have had the pleasure of presenting at The LIDO.

While walking down the street after leaving The LUNA Lounge, we noticed a black dog ahead of us. As we approached, a cab drove by asking if we would like a ride. As we got in to the cab, we noticed the dog for the second time. The dog was very skinny, you could see her hips and ribs, and she looked really sick.

We had a very in-depth discussion that went something like this:

Brian: Uh, Cindy

Cindy: Is it bad?

Brian: Yeah….

Cindy: Are we taking her?

Brian: I think so.

Cindy: OK.

The cab driver allowed us to take her in the vehicle and drove us back to our place. We fed, bathed and comforted her that evening. We took her to the vet the next day where she spent over a week there because she was very sick. We then brought her back to FSJ with us (along with 2 other dogs who had been adopted in FSJ). We named her Luna, after the Luna Lounge in Bucerias, where we met her. The vet estimated she was about 8 or 9 years old at the time.

As we already have 2 dogs at home (both rescues, one from Mexico and one from FSJ), we didn’t plan on keeping Luna and took some steps to find her a home when we returned to FSJ. It didn’t take long for us to decide that she was already part of our family and wasn’t going anywhere.

Three years later, Luna has now settled in, gained some weight (we call it ‘full figured’) and is now a regular part of the LIDO during the day.

Luna takes her job of greeting all people very seriously. We feel very fortunate that Luna’s path crossed ours that day and therefore it felt like a great fit that when we created our new Rooftop Patio, that we named it The LUNA Lounge, after our gal who has become such a regular part of The LIDO.

At the airport in Puerto Vallarta, Luna is ready to travel to her new life in Canada with her friends.
